Small Closet Ideas for Bedrooms

A small bedroom closet holds more once you double the hanging rod, use the door and the top shelf, and move off-season clothes out. Most of these fixes hook, hang or stand in place, so they suit a rental. Start by emptying the closet, because you plan better around what you actually keep.

How do you organize a small closet?

Organize a small closet in four steps: empty it, edit it, zone it, then add organizers that fit the gaps you measured. Buying organizers first is the usual mistake, because they rarely match the space left over.

  1. Empty the closet completely and wipe the shelf and floor.
  2. Edit: keep what you wear this season and box the off-season clothes for under the bed.
  3. Zone: long hanging, short hanging, folded, shoes, bags.
  4. Measure each zone's width, height and depth, then buy organizers to fit.

How do you get more hanging space?

Hang a second rod below the first, so shirts, skirts and folded trousers use the height under them. Short items end well above the floor, and on a single rod the height under them sits empty.

  • Hanging rod extender

    No trace

Hooks over the existing rod and adds a lower one for short items. No tools.

  • Matching slim hangers

    No trace

One thin hanger style fits more on the rod than a mix of bulky ones and keeps the shoulders level.

  • One long-hanging zone

    No trace

Keep coats and dresses at one end, full height, with short items doubled beside them.

  • Hanging fabric shelves

    No trace

Shelves that hang from the rod hold folded sweaters and T-shirts.

How do you use the top shelf and the floor?

Put lidded, labeled bins on the top shelf and a low shoe rack or drawer unit on the floor, so both ends of the closet hold something.

  • Labeled bins on the top shelf for off-season clothes, spare bedding and bags
  • Shelf dividers to stop folded stacks from toppling
  • A two-tier shoe rack or a small drawer unit under the short-hanging zone
  • A slim hamper in a floor corner

How do you use the closet door?

Hang an over-the-door organizer on the inside of the closet door for shoes, belts, scarves or bags. Over-the-door racks hook over the top of the door and need no screws, so they suit a rental.

  • A pocket shoe organizer
  • An over-the-door hook rack for bags and robes
  • An over-the-door mirror

Check that the door still closes with the organizer full. Swing doors that block the floor in front of the closet come off only with the landlord's yes. Store them safely and hang a curtain on a tension rod in their place.

How do you light the inside of a closet?

Battery or rechargeable LED lights with a motion sensor light a closet without any wiring. They switch on when the door opens and off when you walk away.

  • Motion-sensor puck lights under the shelf
  • A rechargeable LED bar along the front edge of the top shelf
  • A battery LED strip down the inside of the door frame

Adhesive mounts come off with care; peel them slowly the way the pack shows. A hardwired closet light is an ask-first job for the landlord or an electrician.

Which closet systems are renter-friendly?

Freestanding, hanging and tension-mounted closet systems are renter-friendly; wall-mounted rails and track systems need screws and the landlord's yes.

What if the closet is still too small?

Add one storage piece outside the closet, such as a dresser, a wardrobe or an open rail, and keep the closet for hanging.

  • A dresser takes folded clothes out of the closet.
  • An open rail holds the week's outfits.
  • Under-bed bins take the off-season clothes.

Our guide to clothing storage for small bedrooms covers wardrobes, rails and dressers for rooms with little or no closet. For the rest of the room, see small apartment bedroom ideas.

Questions people ask

How do I maximize a small closet?

Double the hanging with a second rod, put bins on the top shelf and a rack on the floor, and use the back of the door. Move off-season clothes under the bed so the closet holds only what you wear now.

Can I install a closet system in a rental?

Yes, when it stands on the floor, hangs from the rod or tension-mounts between the walls. A system screwed into the wall needs the landlord's written okay first.

How do I light a closet with no outlet?

Use battery or rechargeable LED lights with a motion sensor, mounted with adhesive or magnets. They need no wiring and come off at move-out.

What hangers save the most space in a small closet?

Slim, matching hangers save the most rod space, because one thin style packs tighter than a mix of bulky plastic and wooden ones. Covered non-slip hangers also stop clothes sliding to the closet floor.

Should I take the doors off a small closet?

Only with the landlord's okay, and keep the doors safe to rehang at move-out. A curtain on a tension rod then hides the closet and needs no floor space to open.
