Renter-Friendly Wall Decor Ideas

Renter-friendly wall decor goes up without new holes and comes down without marks. This guide covers which apartment wall to decorate first, the maker's exact steps for hanging pictures without nails, decor beyond framed art, and how to remove it all at move-out.

Which apartment walls should you decorate first?

Decorate the wall you see first from the front door, then the wall behind the sofa, then the wall behind the bed. Those three walls shape how the apartment looks, so they earn the best pieces and the most care.

How to hang pictures without nails

Hang pictures without nails with adhesive picture-hanging strips on a clean, fully cured, painted wall, staying under the weight rating on the pack. These steps come from 3M's own instructions for Command Picture Hanging Strips.

  1. Wait 7 days after the wall was painted before you use strips.
  2. Wipe the wall with rubbing alcohol, not household cleaners or water.
  3. Remove the sawtooth or wire hanging hardware from the back of the frame.
  4. Click the strip pairs together, then stick them to the frame: two at the top corners and two halfway down the sides.
  5. Press the frame to the wall, peel it off again from the bottom, and press each strip on the wall for 30 seconds.
  6. Wait 1 hour for the adhesive to build, then press the frame back on until each pair clicks.

3M's instructions also rule out three uses: hanging over a bed, hanging on wallpaper, and hanging valuable or irreplaceable items. Lean those pieces instead.

Other ways to hang without nails

  • A freestanding easel

    No trace

Stand a large canvas on a floor easel in a corner. It reads as art and moves with you.

  • Picture rail hooks

    No trace

Some older apartments have a picture rail near the ceiling. Rail hooks and cord hang frames from it.

  • Over-the-door hangers

    No trace

Hang a mirror or a small frame on the back of a bedroom or closet door.

  • A tension-rod gallery

    No trace

Fit a tension rod across an alcove and clip prints to it with binder clips or wire.

  • A tapestry on adhesive hooks

    Comes off with care

Light fabric hangs from a few adhesive hooks along its top edge, each under its rating.

How big should wall art be in an apartment?

Wall art looks right when the piece or group spans most of the furniture beneath it, not a small patch in the middle. Small frames on a big wall look lost; group them into one shape instead.

  • Treat a group of frames as one piece: plan it as a rectangle, a row or a grid.
  • Line up either the top edges or the centers of the frames, not neither.
  • Hang art close enough above the sofa or bed that it reads as part of that furniture.
  • Trace each frame on paper, cut it out and tape it up with painter's tape to test the layout before you stick anything.

The 3D styler includes wall art, mirrors and shelves. Drag them onto the walls of a styled living room or bedroom and check the spacing before you buy a single strip.

Apartment wall decor ideas beyond framed art

Mirrors, textiles, light and shelves all count as apartment wall decor, and three of them need no hardware at all. Mixing one non-art piece into a wall keeps it from looking like a gallery.

  • A large leaned mirror

    No trace

Lean it behind a console or dresser opposite a window to double the daylight.

  • Plates or baskets on a shelf

    No trace

Stand them upright on an existing shelf or ledge for texture without hanging anything.

  • Plug-in sconces

    Comes off with care

Light is wall decor after dark. Corded sconces with an adhesive mount add it without wiring.

  • Removable decals

    Comes off with care

Test one in a hidden spot first, because paints and adhesives vary.

  • Floating shelves or a picture ledge

    Ask first

Both need screws into the wall. Ask the landlord in writing before you drill.

  • An accent wall in paint

    Ask first

The biggest change and the biggest ask. Get written permission and agree who repaints at move-out.

How to take wall decor down without damage

Peel the frame off from its bottom corners, then stretch each strip slowly straight down along the wall, never away from it. 3M's instructions say to keep stretching for at least 15 inches until the strip releases.

  1. Lift the frame off by its bottom corners, not by pulling it straight out.
  2. Grip the strip's tab and stretch it slowly downward, flat against the wall.
  3. Remove adhesive hooks with the method printed on their own pack.
  4. Check the wall in daylight for residue, and clean it the way the pack directs.
  5. Fill old nail holes only when your lease allows tenant repairs.

Questions people ask

What is the best way to hang pictures in an apartment without nails?

Adhesive picture-hanging strips hang framed pictures without nails, as long as the frame stays under the weight rating on the pack. Leaning art on furniture is the zero-risk option.

How long after painting can I use adhesive strips?

3M's instructions for Command Picture Hanging Strips say to wait 7 days after painting. Other brands set their own wait, so read the pack.

Can adhesive strips hold a heavy mirror?

Adhesive strips hold only up to the weight printed on the pack, and 3M's instructions say not to hang valuable or irreplaceable items with them. Lean a heavy mirror on the floor or a dresser instead.

Do I need permission to hang pictures in my apartment?

Your lease sets the answer, so read its clause on alterations before you use a nail. Leaning art and adhesive strips avoid the question entirely.
